NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR HEARING
RESEARCH
FUNDING GRANT IN HONOR OF DR. EARLEEN
ELKINS
Each year the National Organization for Hearing
Research Foundation (NOHR) awards seed money grants
of $10,000 each for investigations into the
preventions, causes, treatments and cures of
hearing loss and deafness. Proposals that receive
the highest rating from NOHR's Scientific Review
Committee because of their superior scientific
merit and exceptional potential are designated
Named Grants in honor of special people and donors.
Several years ago, after Dr. Earleen Elkins retired
from the National Institute on Deafness and Other
Communication Disorders, NOHR established the
Earleen Elkins, Ph.D., Award for Excellence in
Auditory Research for her exemplary contributions
to the field. It is given to a female investigator
whose proposal is top-ranked. Recipients have
included Jennifer Melcher, Ph.D., Elizabeth
Keithley, Ph.D. and Gilda Kalinec, Ph.D. NOHR's
grant in Dr. Elkins name will continue to be given
in perpetuity following her untimely death this
past Sunday, January 27, 2002.
The National Organization for Hearing Research
Foundation would be honored to received donations
in her memory for this named grant from members of
ARO. NOHR will notify Dr. Elkins' husband, James
Lebo, of the names of all donors of memorial
gifts.
