SUMMARY:ARO Education Committee Coffee Hour | Establishing Your Lab as a New PI
DESCRIPTION:Join ARO and the Education Committee for a special coffee hour on the topic of "Establishing Your Lab as a New PI" \nDate: Wednesday\, September 10\, 2025\nTime: 12:00-1:00 PM Eastern\nMentor Panelists: Dr. Jinkyung Kim and Dr. Taha A. Jan \nAbout the Session:\nJoin us for the Education Committee’s Coffee Hour session on “Establishing Your Lab as a New PI”\, featuring Dr. Taha Jan (Vanderbilt University) and Dr. Jinkyung Kim (Washington University\, St. Louis). Starting your own lab as a new PI is challenging\, yet a rewarding and exciting opportunity to begin a scientific career as an independent investigator in academia. This session will explore the challenges of starting your own lab (particularly in the first six months)\, including promoting yourself within the institution to strategic planning for setting up the lab space\, negotiating and ordering equipment\, and\, most importantly\, hiring team members\, which contributes greatly to the success of a lab group. Our guest speakers will also discuss time management\, including distributing one’s time for teaching and research while maintaining a good work-life balance and productivity. \nCLICK here to learn more about the panelists \nCLICK here to RSVP!

Schuknecht Professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the Harvard Medical School and the former Director of the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear (1997 – 2022). He received his B.A. in Biology from Harvard College in 1972 and his Ph.D. in Physiology from Harvard Medical School in 1976\, working with Nelson Kiang on the responses of single auditory-nerve fibers in normal and noise-damaged ears. Following his thesis work\, he did a post-doctoral stint with Sanford Palay in the Anatomy Department at Harvard performing a serial-section ultrastructural analysis of the normal synaptic connections between auditory-nerve terminals and inner hair cells. He has published over 215 papers on a variety of topics in auditory neuroscience and has received a number of awards including the Award of Merit from the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (2009)\, the Bekesy Silver Medal from the Acoustical Society of America (2012) and the Grand Prix Scientifique from the Fondation pour l’Audition (2022). His research interests include 1) the coding of acoustic stimuli as neural responses in the auditory nerve\, 2) efferent feedback control of the auditory periphery\, 3) the mechanisms underlying noise-induced and age-related hearing loss\, 4) the signaling pathways mediating nerve survival in the inner ear and 5) the application of viral- and drug-based therapies to the repair of a damaged inner ear.

SUMMARY:ARO Seminar Series - Auditory Nerve - Beyond Mammals: Auditory-nerve Responses Across Different Species Presented by Dr. Christine Köppl
DESCRIPTION:🔊 Join ARO and the ARO Education Committee for our newest Seminar Series exploring the Auditory Nerve. \nWe’re thrilled to kick off this enlightening series with the first featured talk: \n"Beyond Mammals: Auditory-nerve Responses Across Different Species" Presented by Dr. Christine Köppl \nDate: Wednesday\, April 29\, 2026 \nTime: 12:00-1:00 PM ET USA \nRegistration Required: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/vVdShmZtQA-0HzNfNFApvg \nDr. Christine Köppl \nDept. of Neuroscience\, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg\, Germany \n Dr. Köppl has a background in zoology and neuroscience. Her long-standing broad interest is the evolution of the auditory system\, with comparative work on mammals\, birds and reptiles\, from the cochlea to the midbrain. She has published 115 peer-reviewed papers\, including 31 reviews.\nChristine received her Biology diploma (equivalent to a Master) in 1985\, from the Technical University of Munich. She did her PhD work at the same university\, with Geoff Manley\, on inner-ear anatomy and physiology of lizards. She remained based at the TU Munich\, interrupted by multiple research phases in Australia\, working on lizards\, and in the USA\, working on barn owl sound localization. After a prestigious Heisenberg fellowship by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (the major granting body in Germany)\, Christine moved to a faculty position at the Dept. of Physiology\, University of Sydney\, Australia\, in 2006. In 2009\, she returned to Germany\, as full professor at the Carl-von-Ossietzky Universität in Oldenburg. There\, she was part of the large Cluster of Excellence “Hearing4all” and her research under this umbrella focused on age-related hearing loss and cochlear ageing\, using the Mongolian gerbil as the predominant animal model. Most recently\, she added novel data from ageing birds that\, in contrast to mammals\, are able to regenerate sensory hair cells. Now retired\, Christine is still working to wrap up and publish her latest projects.

SUMMARY:International Hearing-Aid Research Conference (IHCON 2026)
DESCRIPTION:International Hearing-Aid Research Conference (IHCON 2026)\nDate: August 5–9\, 2026 (Wednesday to Sunday)\nVenue: The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Banff\, Alberta\, Canada.\nWebsite: ihcon.org \nWe are very pleased to announce that the next International Hearing-Aid Research Conference (IHCON 2026) will be taking place August 5–9\, 2026 (Wednesday to Sunday) at an exciting and beautiful new venue: The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Banff\, Alberta\, Canada. \nThe purpose of IHCON is to advance knowledge and facilitate progress in hearing-aid research and development through the exchange of current research findings and technical advances related to the treatment of hearing impairment with hearing aids and other technologies. \nThe organization of IHCON 2026\, as with the previous IHCON meetings\, will emphasize the international and multidisciplinary nature of the field and the rapid pace of developments occurring throughout the world. Both invited and contributed presentations will address topics relevant to hearing-aid research. \nThe members of the Technical Program Committee (Dr. Graham Naylor\, Dr. Jason Galster\, and Dr. Sarah Verhulst) have been working hard to develop the scientific program and are currently in the process of finalizing the list of invited speakers. The topic areas for IHCON 2026 are available to view here. Once the invited speakers are finalized\, we will post updated information about the technical program in the “Conference Info” tile of the ihcon.org website. \nTo foster research by junior investigators (e.g.\, advanced graduate students\, postdocs\, and junior scientists) in industry and academia\, the International Hearing-Aid Seminar (IHAS 2026) will be held August 3–5\, 2026 (Monday to Wednesday)\, also at the Banff Centre. \nWe will begin accepting abstract submissions for IHCON and IHAS in early 2026 (the specific starting date for submissions will be announced in a subsequent email). The final date for submitting abstracts will be April 1\, 2026\, and acceptance/rejection emails will be sent by early June 2026. \nUpdates and additional details about the meeting will be posted to the various tabs within the “Conference Info” section of the IHCON website (ihcon.org). \nPlease share this with any of your colleagues who you think would benefit from participating in IHCON 2026. We believe the change of venue this year will bring many wonderful advantages to the IHCON community. \nIf you have not done so already\, please create a free account at ihcon.org to ensure that you receive all future email announcements about the meeting. The same account will also allow you to submit abstracts and register for the conference when the time comes.
