A postdoctoral fellow position is available immediately in the Kaur Laboratory at the Translational Hearing Center in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Creighton University School of Medicine. We study the contribution of inflammation and immune cells in degeneration, repair and survival of neurons and synapses in the mammalian auditory system. The current projects are involved but not limited to 1) study the role of macrophages and fractalkine signaling in ribbon synapse repair and neuron survival in the cochlea in noise- and age-related hearing loss and 2) to determine the genetic, cellular, and molecular mechanisms of macrophages and fractalkine-mediated neuron survival in the injured cochlea. The research involves using genetic mouse models, breeding and genotyping, auditory function assessment, tissue harvesting and microdissection, organ culture, immunohistochemistry, confocal imaging of fixed and live tissue, flow cytometry, cell sorting, sequencing, bioinformatics, inner-ear delivery, gene or peptide therapy, basic cellular and molecular biology. Opportunities to present scientific data at local, national, and international meetings and grant writing mentorship for independent positions are available and strongly encouraged.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Pharmacology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Immunology, or a relevant field with 0-2 years of experience and should have a strong background in molecular and cellular biology, neuroscience, genetics, biochemistry or physiology. Individual should be highly organized, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, enjoy working in a team environment, and be comfortable handling and caring for small animals.
