Postdoctoral or Research Scientist in Auditory Neurocircuits
The Richardson Lab (www.richardsonlab.org; PI: Ben Richardson) in the Department of Pharmacology at Southern Illinois University – School of Medicine is looking for a talented and motivated postdoctoral fellow or experienced research scientist to join our team working on an NIH funded project focused on understanding circuits involved in auditory processing. Work and training will encompass intracranial viral injections in mice, optogenetics, whole-cell electrophysiology in brain slices, immunohistochemistry, FISH, and microscopy.
Salary: NIH postdoc pay rate (depending on experience)
Percent time: 100%
Anticipated start date: Summer 2021
Anticipated end date: Summer 2022 (renewable annually)
Deadline to apply: Open until filled
Requirements: PhD in an appropriate field (e.g. pharmacology, biology, neuroscience, etc.). Experience in stereotaxic viral injection or electrophysiology is preferred. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
About the position: The main role of the Fellow is to design and execute studies aimed at performing functional assessment of neuronal populations modulating neurons engaged in central auditory attention. Using an optogenetic approach, the fellow will assess the neurotransmitter released by each projection and the functional and molecular identity of neurons projection neurons. In vivo assessment of projection neuron effects on single neuron coding will also be performed.
About the location: Southern Illinois University-School of Medicine has a long history and vibrant research community in the field of hearing research and neuroscience. The Department of Pharmacology and the Neuroscience Institute are home to faculty with expertise in areas from tinnitus, age-related hearing loss, hair cell regeneration, ototoxicity mechanisms, pain, learning and memory, chronobiology, and epilepsy among others. In 2019, SIU-SoM was home to the Midwest Auditory Research Conference (http://www.siumed.edu/marc). As the state’s capital, Springfield is home to an active downtown, excellent dining, and shopping; all while being an easy drive to St. Louis, Chicago, or Peoria.
Interested candidates should send a CV, a brief statement/summary of research interests and contact information of two references to Ben (firstname.lastname@example.org).
