Postdoctoral position – Center for Hearing and Balance, Johns Hopkins University
A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Soroush Sadeghi at the Center for Hearing and Balance, Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Johns Hopkins Hospital (recently moved from SUNY-Buffalo). The postdoc position starts on July 1, 2022.
- The research is funded by an NIH-R01 grant and focuses on the function of vestibular efferents and their effect on the vestibular nerve activity in mice. Depending on the candidate’s experience and interest, he/she can work on one of the 3 projects currently running in the lab. In Project 1, patch clamp electrophysiology recordings will be used to investigate synaptic properties in an in vitro whole tissue preparation of the vestibular end organ in normal and knock out animals. In addition, calcium imaging and optogenetic stimulation will be used to further study the relation between different components of the circuit.
- In Project 2, vestibular sensory evoked potentials (VsEP) will be used to measure the field potential activity of the vestibular nerve in anesthetized mice. Intratympanic injection of drugs will be used to manipulate the activity of the vestibular nerve. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) will be recorded as a behavioral measure of the effect of drug injections on the function of the system.
- In Project 3, in vivo extracellular single unit recording from vestibular-nerve afferent fibers will be used along with optogenetic stimulation of efferents and pharmacological manipulation of the inner ear.
The Center for Hearing and Balance provides great opportunities for collaborative work with other auditory and vestibular researchers with different expertise. My lab will work closely with the lab of Dr. Elisabeth Glowatzki and Dr. Sascha du Lac. Experience with electrophysiology recording (e.g., patch clamp or extracellular) or ABR/VsEP recording is preferred, but not required.
