Visiting Scholar and Post Doctoral – Dr. Santa Maria Lab
- University of Pittsburgh
- Location: PITTSBURGH, PA
- Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
Job Description:
Hearing loss is a widespread issue affecting nearly everyone, often resulting from age, noise exposure, and ear infections. Emerging research now highlights the critical role of the immune system in the development and progression of not only these major causes but also many conditions previously classified as “idiopathic.”
The Santa Maria Lab, a discovery and translational research laboratory relocating to the University of Pittsburgh from Stanford University, is at the forefront of this understanding. Federally funded, the lab’s initial focus is on exploring the immune mechanisms underlying hearing loss in chronic infectious ear disease. However, its efforts extend to a comprehensive investigation of immune mechanisms involved in various forms of hearing loss, including those caused by ear infections, noise, tumors, and autoimmune and immune-mediated inner ear diseases. Notably, the lab is establishing an Immune-Mediated Inner Ear Disease Center to specifically address these conditions. Its research approach employs a multi-faceted strategy, moving from in vitro studies to animal models and ultimately to the analysis of human samples. As a key component of the Pittsburgh Hearing Research Center and a future central pillar of the Pittsburgh Ear Institute, the Santa Maria Lab is well-positioned for impactful discoveries. Furthermore, the lab has a strong history of translating its research findings into tangible outcomes, including clinical trials, technology licensing, industry collaborations, and the launch of startup companies.
We are seeking dedicated and highly motivated Visiting Scholars and Postdoctoral Associates to conduct research within the Santa Maria Lab. These individuals will join a collaborative and interdisciplinary team of scientists with expertise in molecular biology, chemistry, nanomedicines, and microbiology, all working towards the common goal of unraveling the mechanisms of hearing loss and identifying potential cures.
The University of Pittsburgh, consistently recognized for its excellence in medical research and primary care (ranked No. 13 [tie] in Best Medical Schools: Research and No. 11 [tie] in Best Medical Schools: Primary Care by US News & World Report), provides a supportive and dynamic environment for this research. Adding to its appeal, Pittsburgh stands out as a convenient, affordable, and notably safe major city in the USA. Beyond these advantages, Pittsburgh boasts a diverse and thriving economy, anchored by top-tier companies in the education, technology, healthcare, and historic steel industries, making it an attractive destination for professionals and families alike.
