Call for JARO Editor-in-Chief applications

JARO has served as the field's journal of record for decades, publishing foundational research across the auditory and vestibular sciences—from molecular biology and cochlear mechanics to psychoacoustics, cochlear implants, and central auditory processing. The Association for Research in Otolaryngology is now seeking an Editor-in-Chief to lead the journal's next chapter.

This is an appointment for a scientist who wants to do more than maintain a journal—someone with a vision for where the field is heading and the standing to help take it there. The Editor-in-Chief holds full editorial authority over JARO's content, standards, and direction, backed by comprehensive institutional and publisher support. JARO received 314 submissions in 2025, accepted 54, and published 52. In this most recent JCR release, the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for JARO has increased from 2,3 to 2,9 and ranks 7/67 in Q1 OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY category!

THE ROLE

Reporting to the ARO Council and working in close collaboration with the Executive Office, the Editor-in-Chief is empowered to shape JARO's long-term strategy and scientific identity. Core responsibilities include:

    • Setting editorial policy and upholding the highest standards of peer review and publication ethics
    • Recruiting and leading a distinguished team of Associate Editors and Editorial Board members whose expertise reflects the journal's global scope. These positions are in place but the EiC has decision making power to make changes as needed.
    • Soliciting high-impact reviews, commentaries, and commissioned content that advance the field
    • Championing JARO's reputation and visibility within the research and clinical communities
    • Attending the ARO MidWinter Meeting annually to engage directly with members and present a journal update at the General Assembly
    • Organizing a JARO booth or equivalent formal outreach presence at each MidWinter Meeting to promote the journal and engage with the membership
    • Convening bi-annual meetings with Associate Editors and Editorial Board members
    • Submitting quarterly reports to the ARO Council and attending Council meetings 1–2 times per year as requested

SUPPORT

The Editor-in-Chief is well-resourced and supported at every level. A dedicated Editorial Assistant manages day-to-day submission handling and assists as requested with author and reviewer correspondence. ARO's Executive Office provides institutional support and administrative infrastructure. Springer Nature—JARO's publisher—supplies a robust online editorial platform, journal website management, production services, and global distribution. The ARO Council is an engaged governance partner invested in the journal's growth and long-term success.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for an accomplished researcher with an advanced degree (PhD, AuD, MD, or equivalent) and deep expertise in the auditory and/or vestibular sciences, a strong publication record, and the scientific breadth to evaluate work across the full scope of the journal. Prior editorial experience—as an associate editor, editorial board member, and previous experience as a peer reviewer—is strongly preferred.

Strong candidates will also bring excellent judgment and communication skills, the ability to lead and motivate a distributed editorial team, familiarity with publication ethics and the peer-review process, and a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in scholarly publishing. Candidates must be free from significant financial conflicts of interest that could compromise editorial independence.

TERM & COMPENSATION

The Editor-in-Chief is appointed to a five-year term. A formal performance review takes place at the end of year three; the term may be renewed once based on that evaluation. The position carries a $25,000 annual honorarium, paid in four quarterly installments. ARO will reimburse a roundtrip economy flight to the MidWinter Meeting each year.

What is JARO?
