ARO Mini-Grant
The ARO Mini-Grant Program, sponsored by the ARO Communication Committee, aims to support multiple individual ARO members to organize in-person events and develop sustainable partnerships with local community organizations. These events can vary in exact nature– examples may include a one-day science fair with a local science museum where ARO members present their work to the public, an arts/science collaborative event, or a group of ARO scientists presenting an educational series to a local school—but the principal goal is to help ARO members connect with local organizations.

Grant Aim
To facilitate the development of sustainable local partnerships between ARO members and community organizations to provide science outreach and education, advancing science outreach and education on the physiology of hearing and balance, related pathologies, and therapeutic approaches.
For projects connected to an existing program, the proposal must clearly articulate how the ARO Mini-Grant will enhance its value.
The project should also serve to introduce ARO—its mission and activities—to participants and organizers.
Selection Process
Mini-grant applicants (ARO and spARO members) are invited to apply for a 1-year project with up to $1000 of funding. Multiple applications are permitted from the same individual or group. Proposals will be evaluated monthly by the Communication Committee based on partnership strength, feasibility and impact of the proposed activity, and potential for sustainable engagement. Applications will be accepted and awarded on a rolling basis until the annual funding limit is reached. We anticipate 10 awards to be available each year. Funding and number of awards is subject to each years approved annual operating budget.
Reporting
All mini-grant recipients will be required to submit a final report after the 1-year grant period detailing activities completed. Recipients may be eligible for a second cycle of funding, in which a sustainability plan will be prioritized. All awarded proposals will be made available for viewing on the ARO website.

Agudemu Borjigin
Education Programs on Cochlear Implants with Hearing Loss Association of America
Agudemu Borjigin received an ARO Mini-Grant in 2024 to develop an accessible online resource for people seeking reliable information about cochlear implants. Created in partnership with the Hearing Loss Association of America, the website covers cochlear implant candidacy, the implantation process, and strategies for maximizing benefit.
The project created a lasting educational resource while also laying the groundwork for broader outreach, continued website development, and future educational events.

Leslie Gonzales
Hearing and Balance Education in Rochester, NY
Leslie Gonzales received an ARO Mini-Grant in 2025 to create a traveling, interactive outreach booth focused on hearing, balance, and hearing protection. Developed in partnership with the Rochester Museum & Science Center, the project uses hands-on activities to introduce the public, especially school-aged children, to sound, inner-ear biology, hearing and balance assessment, and careers in auditory science.
The booth debuted during the museum’s Space Week in April 2025, creating a platform for continued community outreach and an ongoing partnership with the museum.
