Position description
Academic UCSF Research Specialist Position – Hasenstaub Lab

The Coleman Memorial Laboratories and the Hasenstaub Lab at the University of California, San Francisco are seeking an Associate Specialist. A major focus of the position will be to assist in the development and application of electrophysiological techniques within the Coleman Laboratories. The candidate will engage in animal research in a team setting. Candidate must be willing to work as an integral member of a research team and have strong communication skills. This is a full-time position at UCSF and ideal position for applicants having a sincere fascination with auditory neuroscience.

Responsibilities:

  • Pursue lab’s scientific goals using in vivo electrophysiology, muse surgery data analysis, viral/tracer injection.
  • Assist with paper and grant writing.
  • Equipment maintenance, inventory, and calibration.
  • Relevant vendor interactions and purchasing.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and regulatory bodies (IACUC, EHS, etc).
  • Maintenance of accurate notebooks and computer records.
  • Mouse colony management and documentation (either direct or by overseeing a junior researcher).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters’ degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences or related sciences or must have at least five years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Experienced rodent surgeon.
  • Knowledge of and experience with high channel count electrophysiology / data acquisition systems (TDT, INTAN, Neuropixels, and CED).
  • Knowledge of and experience with statistical analyses of electrophysiological data, including Matlab.
  • Strong Matlab coding ability, and experience with other coding languages (e.g., Python, C++).
  • Knowledge of and experience with neural tracers and associated histology.
  • Knowledge of and experience with auditory stimulation and recording hardware, including ultrasonic.
  • Experience making clear figures using Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Comfort working with instrumentation and computers.
  • Maintenance of accurate notebooks and computer files.
  • Team player with good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to learn, seek out advice and admit errors; highly motivated to succeed.
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to multitask and work under minimal supervision is key for this position.
  • Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist level by the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences or related sciences.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service.
